Multani Mitti means ‘Mud from Multan’. Multan is a city in Pakistan and the substance has been used for centuries in Pakistan and India for cosmetic applications. It consists mainly of clay minerals such as kaolinite, bentonite and attapulgite. The powder is an effective skin cleanser, attracting and removing dirt, oil and other impurities from the skin and also helping to treat acne and other skin problems. It leaves skin clean, soft and supple. One of the best things about multani mitti is that you can use it with a range of other ingredients that suit your skin and hair type to achieve beautiful results. Multani mitti balances oil production in the skin thus benefitting all skin types. It removes blackheads, whiteheads and dead skin cells and gives skin a healthy glow. It boots skin and scalp circulation. It is a mild cleanser for the hair, cleaning the scalp without disturbing the natural oils. It helps to treat dandruff and eczema. It helps to deodorize the scalp and hair. It evens out skin tone and brightens the complexion, helping to reduce pigmentation. It is a cooling agent and is effective in treating sunburn, skin rashes, insect bites and skin infections. It encourages circulation to the skin resulting in radiant skin.
Directions of use:
Multani mitti is very absorbing and if used too often can make some skin types feel dehydrated. Don’t use it more than once or twice a week and if you have dry or sensitive skin, mix multani mitti with moisturising ingredients like aloe vera gel, rose water, milk, honey or a cold-pressed oil of your choice.
Multani Mitti radiance oil-balancing face pack: Mix 1 tablespoon of multani mitti with 2 teaspoons of rose water and enough water or milk to make a smooth paste. Apply to your clean face and neck and rinse after 30 minutes. Pat dry. You can also add a tablespoon of tomato juice and a teaspoon of lemon juice to the mixture.
Pimple-busting face pack: Mix 2 tablespoons of multani mitti, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder into a smooth paste. Apply the mixture to clean skin and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse and gently pat dry. You can do this treatment twice a week. Other ingredients you can add to the pimple buster are neem powder, rose water, lemon juice, lavender essential oil or aloe vera gel.
The even skin tone face scrub: Mix equal quantities of multani mitti, fine sugar and coconut water into a paste. Rub this gently onto your skin using circular motions. Leave it on your skin for 10-15 minutes, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat try. Use once a week. You can also add oatmeal powder and milk to remove dry, dead skin.
Fruity face pack for dry skin: Mash 1 cup of ripe papaya, mix in 1 tablespoon of multani mitti and 1 teaspoon of honey. Add water or more multani mitti as required to make a thick paste. Apply on clean skin, leave it on for 15-20 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. You can add cucumber juice or milk instead of water if you like.
Banish dark circles treatment: Peel 1 potato and mash/grate it into a paste. Thicken the paste with multani mitti, add a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice and a teaspoon of fresh cream and apply the mixture to the area around your eyes. After 15 minutes wash it off gently with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Oily hair treatment: Mix equal quantities of multani mitti and reetha powder with water. Apply this mixture to your scalp and hair. Rinse off after 20 minutes, shampoo and condition if necessary.
Hair growth treatment: Mix multani mitti with enough plain, unsweetened yoghurt to make a paste. Add 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper and a teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Apply this mixture to your scalp, leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse and wash with a mild shampoo.
